Current plans are to make the new air dome available to members in the autumn of this year, expanding our indoor capacity to 4 courts. At this time we will be expanding the number of members - please register your interest in joining the tennis club.
The tennis section of The Wimbledon Club is known as “Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club”. We have been located in Church Road since 1890, some 32 years before our slightly more famous neighbour, the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, relocated from Worple Road. The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club offers a traditional but relaxed ambience for our members.
Our Director of Tennis is the former British Davis Cup Captain, twice US Open Men's Doubles title winner and thrice Wimbledon Singles Semi-Finalist Roger Taylor MBE, not many people can claim to have beaten both Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg at Wimbledon. Roger brings a wealth of invaluable experience as both a Player and Coach to the Club and is actively involved in all aspects of the Tennis section. Quote from Ross Hutchins (Andy Murray's Doubles partner) "When I was around 12 I was playing a lot at The All England Club near my home and school with Roger Taylor, who coached me until I was 15 years old. I had some great battles trying to beat Roger during drills, and he was an excellent technical coach."
A complete range of tennis abilities and ages can be found at the club, from the mini tennis courses, starting from around age 5, through to our most senior players, some of whom are in their eighties. From beginners through to world class players, most notably Melanie South, who has achieved a WTA top 100 ranking. Melanie continues to play club matches when available.
The grass courts are a particular attraction and in the summer months provide a superb playing surface. Nothing beats the pleasure of playing tennis on the grass courts on a summer’s day with play extending into the long summer evenings. The modern clubhouse, with balconies overlooking the tennis courts, provides the perfect place to relax and enjoy the unique setting of our wonderful club.
The indoor sports hall provides welcome relief from the winter weather. For the finer evenings there are floodlights.
The club runs an annual club championship from May to mid-July, when members compete for splendid historic club trophies. The honours boards in the clubhouse provide a permanent record of the champions’ names.
The top club teams compete regularly at the highest levels, the ladies being in National Division 1 and the men are in National Division 2. The older members regularly compete at the highest levels in the senior inter-club and individual tournaments. Several members are ranked very highly at international level.
The high standards achieved by the senior members provide an excellent example for all our aspiring juniors, the future lifeblood of tennis.
