Tennis Etiquette

Most tennis players understand the usual courtesy expected at a tennis club, however the main points are listed here as a reminder to all and there are some Wimbledon specific reminders.

  • Please wait until a break in play before passing behind a court.  Do not wait (or talk) beside the net of a court you are waiting to cross.  If possible consider taking an alternative route, possibly longer, to avoid crossing a court that is in play.

  • Please return tennis balls to other courts, but not while play is in progress or between first and second serves.

  • Please keep the level of noise down to a reasonable level, to avoid disturbing other players’ concentration.  (Think of the quiet at Wimbledon!)

  • In general, when other players are waiting for a court, please vacate your court at the end of the set, or 30 minutes hitting, whichever is the shorter.  If you have not started a set after 5 minutes warm up time then you must vacate the court after 30 minutes if other members are waiting for a court to play.

  • Players may queue for use of a specific court surface (e.g. if all the artificial grass courts are in use but acrylic courts are free, players may elect to wait for the next available artificial grass, the first court to vacate would be the first to reach the end of a set or to complete 30 minutes practice play).

  • Please respect players when using the balcony and paths around the outside of the courts, by keeping noise levels down and not moving behind the court when play is in progress.

  • Once a match has started (club tournament and individual (e.g. Surrey or London Parks) it is permitted to remain on the court un-interrupted until completed.
