Men’s 4’s 2016

End of Season Report

WHC4s are still the team all the guys want to play for and the team all the girls want to be with!

Relegated from Div 1 the season before, and losing a number of stalwarts, we started the season rebuilding with a few new signings in the summer.

Our intention was to get straight back into Div 1 to prove that we belonged.  In retrospect, rebuilding the team and consolidating our standing in Div 2 might have been more realistic, but try tell that to @WHC4s!  We started slowly with only 1 win from our first 4 games.  Throw in a few losses and a few draws, we had to wait until our last game of the first round of matches for another green square.  Disappointingly, we were up in at least 6 of those games, only to either draw or lose.

Despite hovering around the relegation zone, and then losing a key game to other relegation candidates, Spencer, we never stopped believing and knew it would click.  A narrow away loss at Reading proved to be the turning point in our season.  Result aside, we had rediscovered the brand of hockey that has made us the best 4th team in London, perhaps the country.

What followed was 27 goals in our next 7 games, 5 of those ending in victory, one draw and one narrow loss to eventual league winners (yet another game we took the lead but failed to capitalise!).

We finished the season like a train, comfortably in 5th place and certainly ready for the promotion push next season.  Highlights were big away wins at Indian Gym (8-2), Tulse Hill (6-3) and Richmond (5-2).

But what makes this team so special is not the results on the pitch.  It's the friendships off the pitch, the "family" aspect.  It's this aspect that makes us such a formidable team to play against and such a great team to play for.

With that in mind, there are a number of long standing members who need mentioning and congratulating -

Becoming a Dad for the first time: Fluddy, Hoff, Toby & DDC.

Getting engaged in the Summer: Burtie & Laz

It has been a real pleasure leading this team again, albeit for only half a season.  I'm sure Toby won't mind if I say the same on his behalf.
