Wimbledon Cricket Academy - U17, U19 & U21s
The Wimbledon Club recognises that our young cricketers need a specific period of transition from Junior to Senior cricket. In order to provide this we operate a Cricket Academy. The Academy provides continued support, training and playing opportunities for players aged 14 to 19 and over.
Since its establishment it has been very successful in meeting those aims and for the past 3 years over 40 academy members have participated in senior open age cricket annually. At times our club’s ability to run 5 teams on Saturdays has been entirely dependent upon those young players and their contributions have been significant. Some have gone all the way to represent the club at 1stteam level.
In addition to the opportunities of playing Open Age on Saturdays, we run a full programme of games specifically for the key age groups of Under 17, Under 19, and Under 21. Currently this constitutes entry to the Surrey County Under 17 Cup - the Denis Jacobs Cup, the ECB Under 19 T20 tournament, the Surrey Trust Sunday League as an Under 21 team, and the Mid Surrey Under 17 competition. All games in these competitions are played, so much as we can organise, during July and August, thus avoiding the conflict with school cricket and exams. All arrangements are specifically made to ensure Academy members are available to play for senior teams on Saturdays, so they are primarily midweek.
This year, for the first time, we have been able to run training on Sunday evenings throughout the winter, further emphasising our commitment to this age group and facilitating an academy togetherness which will feed naturally on to, and provide support in, senior training and playing, and involvement in our Academy programme later in the season.
